Join the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in our newest
educational initiative:
What we do:
Bring small instrument ensembles into
the schools and give short performances
(25-30 minutes) to classes. Ensembles consist of members of a particular instrumental family:
A string quartet
(2 violins, viola, cello)
A woodwind quartet
(flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon)
A brass quintet
(2 trumpets, French horn, trombone, tuba)
Students will have the opportunity to come up close to see the instruments being played. A child can stand directly
in front of a musician playing the violin
and witness the bow being drawn across the strings and the resulting sound, see and hear the difference in sound when the strings are plucked, and watch as the players fingers move up and down the instrument in order to change the pitch.
In addition to musical concepts, a
visit from the CSO incorporates
inter-disiplinary concepts from
science, math and social sciences.
Additional possibility—Instrument
Petting Zoo
As a follow up to (or in conjunction with) 'The Orchestra Up Close' the students can have a chance to become musicians themselves. After the CSO musicians perform their program, students can
try out and play a special 'petting zoo' instrument brought in just for the occasion!
We are also available for career days
and for special 'guest' appearances!
